Rage Against the Machine

Today I was asked a very pertinent question about the content of this blog:

"Is it just a rant about Big Brother?"

The answer, as should be clear by now, is no, no it's not.

In all honesty I have a vision of the direction this blog should take. I don't want to force an manifesto on you so I'll keep it brief:

My hope is that a small group of bloggers with a passion for all televisual delights can come together and highlight, preferably through the medium of comedy, what it is that makes TV so great and so, so bad.

My dream is that the people that make these delights will contribute to the blog so that it becomes an interactive experience and not just preppy reportage... Here's hoping.

So, what about Big Brother? For the first time since its inception I have nothing to say. I can't rant against something of which I have no knowledge (a view not shared with Daily Mail readers and middle England letter-writers). For the first five or six series of Big Brother I would try to follow every move, every piece of action but my interest and, seemingly, that of the British Public has wained. These wannabe stars of the future are now, in my view, merely a group of faceless non-entities who, after the all-important magazine deal, will disappear up their own obscure arses. Nothing to rant about because there is nothing there to stir any emotion anymore.

I do have one small observation though: I realise that Big Brother has historically taken a healthy portion of the viewing public away from other terrestrial channels but why have the other channels just given up? Surely this is the time to fight back? I think the following figures will help to illustrate:

Viewing figures for the Friday repeat of "Who Do You Think You Are?" (BBC1) featuring Davina McCall - 6.4 Million.
Viewing figures for the Friday edition of "Big Brother" (Channel 4) hosted by Davina McCall - 2 Million

Imagine what would have happened if something truly mouthwatering had been shown on BBC1 that night!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not of the opinion that "reality TV" is dying - in several forms it is thriving but has BB passed its best? You decide!

Teachings 1

Three things I have learnt from TV this week:
  1. Kari Byron looks hotter than usual painted in Aluminium paste (Mythbusters various channels, various times - check listings)
  2. Kate Humble's default mode is crying (Who Do You think You Are? BBC1 Tuesday 9pm and BBC iPlayer)
  3. AC/DC's Brian Johnson is simultaneously the most and least famous man ever to appear on Top Gear (Top Gear BBC2 Sunday 8pm and BBC iPlayer)

Psychoville featuring the extreme and brilliant comedy of League of Gentlemen's Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith comes to an end tonight. If you haven't been watching the whole series is still available on iPlayer.
